Why do so many veterinarians sell Hill’s Science Diet pet food, when it seems to be rated so low?
leezard asked:
According to all the research I can find, it’s really only mediocre quality food at best, and way over priced.

$$$$
Maybe the vets have a franchise with the company that makes the food.

Hills is a big corporate dog food company…they make the food where I live and it makes the whole town smell!!!! I know the vets here are pressured to sell it. i don’t buy it, though.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$………remember that the vets charge double their cost.

I have not heard bad ratings on Hill’s Science Diet. Some of it you can only buy with a prescription. It may not be some breeder’s choice for certain breeds of dogs, BUT I have NEVER seen bad ratings…here is one testimonial on it, and I will give you a link that has testimonials and ratings on every dog food imaginable…

Review: My puppy was growing so fast that her feet begant to flatten out because she wasn’t receiving enough vitamins from her current dog food. My veterinarian suggested Science Diet and within weeks her feet began to right themselves. She has a beautiful coat and she is very healthy. A friend of mine feeds her dog an inexpensive brand of dog food and the difference, especially in their coat, is obvious. Although her dog has intestinal problems, my baby never suffers that way. I am very happy and would not change brands even though Science Diet tends to be on the expensive side. She is part of the family and the cost of her food doesn’t even compare to the amounts we eat each month.
Pluses: My dog is in excellent health. Minuses: The bag can be a little difficult to open
Suggestions: Suggestions: The top of the bag could have some contraption to make it easier to open and reuse

I work in a vet’s office and it’s Hill’s Perscription Diet not Hill’s Science Diet two different brands prehaps. I know you can buy the Science Diet in stores as well as some vet’s may carry it for whatever reason they have. If you want an honest answer to your question, ask your Vet why he sell’s it. If your vet doesnt feed it to his pet then why is he selling it? The money isnt everything and trust me they may have a mark up on the price but thats not where there making there money.

It is because Hill’s Science Diet funds so many programs at vet schools that vets become - well - indoctrinated into thinking it is a good food.
I agree with you. It is not a good food!!!
I do have to admit that their perscription food is another subject.

Most vets know nothing about animal nutrition. The folks at Hill’s capitalized on this. They provide the vets with foods that are labeled for certain conditions and the vets sells them at HUGE profit. None of the prescription foods are medicated.
A holistic vet or an animal nutritionist will be able to give you better advice than most vets. Your regular vet does not mean to give you bad info, they just don’t know any better.

Vet schools teach nutrition with a seminar only, and it just so happens to be taught by Hills Science Diet. Vets generally know little or nothing about nutrition. And, yes, SD is a mediocre food at best, although well advertised.

The vets make a ton of money off of the food. It is because of the $$$$$$.
